Glutathione (GSH; L-Glutathione reduced; CAS# 70-18-8) is an endogenous tripeptide composed of γ-glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, characterised by an unusual γ-peptide bond between the glutamate side-chain carboxyl and the cysteine amine. It is the most abundant intracellular low-molecular-weight thiol and functions as the primary endogenous redox buffer in mammalian cells. GSH is studied as a biochemical research tool for investigating oxidative stress models, Nrf2/ARE pathway activation, glutathione peroxidase and reductase enzyme kinetics, and cellular redox homeostasis. Research applications include GSH/GSSG ratio determination in oxidative stress models, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GR) enzyme activity assays, Nrf2/Keap1/ARE pathway activation studies, protein S-glutathionylation analysis, and antioxidant capacity benchmarking in cell-free systems.
