What is concentration?
In a laboratory context, concentration describes how much mass of a compound is present in a given volume of liquid. It’s expressed as mass divided by volume — most commonly in milligrams per millilitre (mg/mL) or micrograms per millilitre (mcg/mL).
Concentration is a ratio, not a fixed amount — the same compound can exist at many different concentrations depending on how much mass is present relative to the volume it’s dissolved in.
Understanding mg, mcg, and mL
mg — Milligram: A unit of mass. One milligram equals 1,000 micrograms.
mcg — Microgram: A smaller unit of mass, commonly used for very small quantities of research compounds. There are 1,000 mcg in 1 mg.
mL — Millilitre: A unit of liquid volume, equal to one-thousandth of a litre.
How concentration math works
Concentration is calculated by dividing total compound mass by total liquid volume:
Concentration (mg/mL) = Total compound mass (mg) ÷ Total liquid volume (mL)
For example, a sample containing 5 mg of compound in a total volume of 3 mL has a concentration of approximately 1.67 mg/mL — the same math applies regardless of the specific compound or sample size.
To convert a concentration from mg/mL to mcg/mL, multiply by 1,000. A concentration of 1.67 mg/mL is equal to 1,670 mcg/mL.
Worked example
A sample contains 10 mg of compound in a total volume of 2 mL.
Concentration = 10 mg ÷ 2 mL = 5 mg/mL, or 5,000 mcg/mL.
